AROUND TOWN: SWEET SALVAGE AUGUST EVENT

Over the weekend, I ventured back to Sweet Salvage to see this months event: "Let Them Eat Cake!" Sweet Salvage is a unique home furnishings + gifts shop: it's only open 4 days monthly, and by having a limited opening, Sweet Salvage can offer their customers a fresh "theme" of merchandise each month. Yes, big-box retailers often re-set their stores monthly, but they are open all the days in between and sometimes, that can just give a shop-worn appearance to the store. This limited opening helps to create hype and excitement - something for us locals to look forward to and enjoy. Sweet Salvage engages people on their Facebook page to name the theme, and then they create the curated vignettes for it. For example, this months theme was "Let Them Eat Cake!" - a theme set with romance &  sweets to celebrate their one year since opening.  I did inquire about helping to set the store events, but I was told their 'vignettes are created by the designers & dealers of Sweet Salvage.'

The building at one time was actually an auto body shop. Be sure to read the Story of Sweet Salvage on their blog, plus visit them to see the slides from the previous curated shops. Although they had opened on Thursday (with a much larger inventory + crowd!!), here are some details from my tour on Saturday...

Sweets!!

Stylish studs!

GREAT on trend trunks!

LOVED this red dress!

Although I don't live with this style in my own home, I still very much appreciate the style + the stories behind the style. Sarah had spoken with the SteamPunk dealer and learned about the ways the merge & upcycle old pieces into new furnishings. I did actually pick up a vintage level... that reminded me of my dad :)
(I just need to take a picture of it in sunlight to post)

SWEET SALVAGE LOCATION:
4648 N 7th Ave
Phoenix, AZ 85013
602 - 279 - 2996

The next Sweet Salvage event is on
 Thursday - September 20 thru Sunday - September 23

Also on Saturday, I had also met up Sarah at Sweet Salvage (she is one of the girls I met to go thrifting with a two weeks ago.) I'm currently organizing another meet-up (on September 20), but I'd like for even more local thrift & vintage enthusiasts to join me, Sarah and Lisa. Back in Florida, I use to do a regular post called "Thrifty Thursday", and I want to carry over that theme to a Third Thursday Thrift & Meet Up. Since Sweet Salvage also launches their shop on the third Thursday each month, I think this could be a great place for us all to meet up at & check out... Then do what me and Sarah did Saturday: Check out other local vintage or thrift shops in the area.

To take the meet up a step further, I'm creating a Group Pinboard for us to share our finds, plus tweet those finds as (hashtag) #FridayFinds. Since we all also have our own social networks, it can be another way for others outside our area to also join in on Twitter or the group Pinboard. For example, Kate of Dabble In Chic will be visiting Arizona in October and we're going thrifting, but she can also share her finds from her local area in North Carolina when she gets back. It's just another way we can all connect & share ideas plus creative points of view of this thrift & vintage movement.

If you too are ever visiting the Phoenix area (or already live here) and you'd like to meet up, just let me know at nyclqd@yahoo.com.

Thanks for stopping by!

MOODBOARD MONDAY: BLACK & GOLD

Welcome back! Hope you enjoyed your weekend. While Jeff enjoyed golfing on his 3 day weekend, I enjoyed doing some more exploring, getting to know our new area, plus a meet up with one of the girls I went thrifting with last week. Along with sourcing new shops in the area, I've also been clocking mileage and time. Speaking of time, yesterday was the birthday of a lady who pioneered a timeless style: Coco Chanel. Probably my favorite key legendary combination from Chanel is the pairing of black & gold... the color inspiration behind this weeks Moodboard Monday. Black and Gold was a strong color pairing back in the 80's and is notably making a strong comeback this year in both Fashion + Decor...

BLACK & GOLD Moodboard
Inspirations merging Fashion + Decor
Note the deco pattern in the gown (to the left) relates to the plate pattern and the gold heel of the shoes. The black & gold Greek Key bowl relates to the fretwork gold screen. The black white and gold globe light fixture relates to the b& w pattern in the black & gold space. The sophisticated & sleek black & gold gown relates to the the simple sconce and the gold chain floor lamp relates to the black & gold drum shade chandy.

BLACK + GOLD + WHITE Room-board
Chanel-esque inspired salon for couture fittings - merging Chanel core inspired pieces:
pearl colored walls, plus black & gold accents.

BLACK + GOLD + PEARLS Style-board

When I pull together a look, for a room, a home, or a display I try not to take an inspiration too  literally. I believe a stronger impact can be to infer the inspiration vs. being literal because it helps to prevent a "themed" look. For example tufted upholsterer can refer to the quilting of a Chanel hand bag and gold oval back chairs in a cream fabric can refer to pearls.

Some other black & gold Chanel inspirations...

I am OBSESSED with this chandelier...
It's gorgeous and it should be at $13,800+
(thank goodness for Pinterest where pretty inspirations like this can live)

Love this Ralph Lauren space set in a Chanel style inspired mood...

More meet-ups are planned this week along with
a few collaborations with others I'll be sure to share.
Have a great week!

FRIDAY FINDS: ON TREND TRUNKS!

Looking for clever storage with character? Look no further than a simple trunk. Trunks are a great storage item to use in a small space, like a dorm or guest room, mostly because they can preform double duty. A trunk used as a coffee table in a guest room might stash extra sleeping pillows while one as a side table can stash extra sheets and throws. Storage trunks are also great for storing seasonal items like boots and sweaters or keepsakes like photo albums and scrap books. Trunks can be found as small as a cube or a suitcase or as large as a steamer trunk or wardrobe used in travels. Not only can trunks be used in the home for storage and charm, they can also be used as a prop in a retail store or as a  fixture in a vintage shop. Here are some trunks I've spotted from a vintage market in Phoenix called Sweet Salvage to Goodwill thrift shops in the valley plus a few inspirations from Pinterest...

LOVE these!
Scored them at Goodwill!

Only $15.99 after  coupon!

Only $6.99!

When thrifting for trunks, don't forget to check the condition inside + ensure that the trunk CAN be open. Some (most) trunks do have locks and small keys sometimes o get lost. The inside finish can be recovered with your favorite fabric for an update and clean space for linens.

Above is the one that got away...

The key was lost for this trunk so it had to be picked open.

Another one: I should have bought it when I saw it....
Especially at only $7.99

And inside was in god condition...

This trunk on the other hand, was more vintage, and the price reflected that
(even though it was at Goodwill)

$99.99

Above was another great deal (yes, I passed by) at only $24.99
vs. below at a vintage market for $149

Here are some ways to refinish and re-purpose trunks in your home...
A bar...

Shelves...

Stacked with numbers...

Painted as a coffee table...

Stacked under a console for storage and character...

So over the weekend, while your out thrifting, if you see an old trunk, rethink it and go for it! There is always a space it can fit into to give you extra storage plus it's easier to haul than a chest of drawers! 9Although that too can come in handy - replace the drawers with suitcases...
