WoMAC - It's In the Bag Fund Raiser - Phoenix Art Museum

It's In The Bag - Phoenix Art Museum
Saturday, September 27

The Women's Metropolitan Arts Council (WoMAC) is hosting its sixth annual fundraiser. “It’s In The Bag!” is an evening of cocktails, gourmet hors d'oeuvres prepared by local chefs, shopping, and fun that provides Phoenix Art Museum guests with the ultimate night out. Dine on food from local restaurants St. Francis, Gallo Blanco, Del Friscos, Nook Pizzeria, Nothing Bundt Cakes & Urban Cookies. Drink from an open bar plus enjoy wine tastings by two local wineries.

The event boasts live entertainment and a silent auction. This is an excellent means to meet and socialize with art museum members plus attendees while raising money for the Phoenix Art Museum.

The title of the event stems from the concept that items will be auctioned with a thematic bag. Whether the bag is a designer bag with theatre tickets or a gym bag with a gift certificate for personal training sessions, there is something for everyone.

Tickets are $75 each - available online at: PhxArt.org

In October, when temps will start to drop (a little) Phoenix will host even a few more metropolitan events such as art festivals, a jazz festival and - Phoenix Fashion Week, which is sponsored by Mercedes Benz (just as New York Fashion Week!)

If the valley is still to hot for you, now is a great time to take a drive up north to Sedona. You can read my previous series - Sedona in September at:

Hope you get out and get inspired!

FASHION + ART AT THE PHOENIX ART MUSEUM

A pleasant way to spend the day here in Phoenix, taking in some culture, is to visit the Phoenix Art Museum. From inside and outside the museum, there are plenty of opportunities to engage in different activities or view different exhibits - from movies, concerts, and lectures in its theater, to open gallery talks, art classes and society soirees in the courtyard. Museum visitors can also enjoy the interactive PhxArtKids gallery and vibrant photography exhibitions. Occasionally, the Phoenix Art Museum hosts special exhibitions or even luncheon events. Since moving to Arizona and visiting the Phoenix Art Museum, I've learned the permanent collection includes more than 17,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American art, and also my favorites:  Modern-Contemporary art and Fashion Design. The most recent Fashion Gallery installation is all about capes. The cape collection exhibit, curated by Dennita Sewell, is called Cape Crusade, and will be on exhibit until February 9, 2014.

One of my favorite cape displays of the exhibit - leopard of course...

The fashion exhibits usually incorporate archives of vintage fashion magazines...

Even the ladies lounge had beautifully photographed fashion displayed on the wall...

You never know when and where inspiration can strike: This was one of three headboards of painted maps...

Upcoming event in January 2014 at the phoenix Art Museum: The Fourth Annual Independent Women Luncheon, sponsored by My Sister's Closet, featuring Interior Designer Bunny Williams as the Guest Speaker. "Read My Pins" is an upcoming exhibit that caught my attention - It's The Madeleine Albright Collection, opening November 23.

With the now beautiful fall weather, it's great to experience the Dorrance Sculpture Garden...

You can visit the Phoenix Art Museum site to view their admission fees plus  calendar of upcoming events and exhibits at: http://www.phxart.org/ and follow the museum on Twitter @phxart. Also, visit my two previous posts about the museum at:

Around Town: Film + Fashion at Phoenix Art Museum

A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon: A movie and a museum! Last Sunday, Jeff and I ventured off to the Phoenix Art Museum to see a special showing of the film The Artist. LOVED the film but even better after it: loved seeing the fashions of the 20's on exhibit - including Coco Chanel - donated from the fashion & costume institute. Vogue and Harper's Bazaar magazine covers from the 20's were also on display. Photography was prohibited in this fashion exhibit, but a did snap a few from outside + a prior exhibit (see: Fashion Gallery). I'm glad we had a chance to see this exhibit before the new installation coming in February. We saw some other interesting works on display + had a light lunch at their restaurant called Palette at Phoenix Art Museum. Seeing the open modern spaces & architecture was very refreshing...

Above was a piece created by laying out junk (literally) in a space, and taking a photo from a distance to see the form (after I shot it, I noticed the "no photo" symbol, so sorry - no close-up!)

I had seen this before, but it's part of the museums permanent collection:  An amazing display of color with only the use of paper was an installation created from 1.4 million pieces of paper. Cool colors on one side, and warm color on the other...

1920's dresses on display near the gift shop...

Peeking into the 1920's exhibit (no photos allowed inside exhibit)

Great exhibit to see after watching "The Artist"...

... a brief lecture about the art of silent films was held before the film...

Loved the architecture of the museum itself...
