TREND SPOTTING: HOOKED ON HORSES

Trotting and trend spotting through this Tuesday is a trend I've noticed in magazines, on the web, and even in stores - HORSES. But not just any horses - oversized wild horse as B&W or sepia images, wooden or metal horse sculptures, and even white glossy wall mounted & sculptural white horse heads...

I'm particular drawn to this interior image (spotted on houzz) I'm in admiration of the well balanced mix of the clean lines,  modern rustic rough texture of the concrete wall paired with the elegance, strength and beauty of the oversized image of wild horses... I had seen this space just after spotting some similar style images on the facebook wall of DWR CEO John Edelman - his wife Bonnie is a talented photographer and had posted these images adjacent to images of DWR chairs on a rooftop in NYC...

It was these images that prompted me to seek out more images of styling with horses and learn of some other photography of wild horses. Below are some images I found from Annie Leibovitz, Bob Tabor, and some more beautiful images from Bonnie Edelman ...

Whether your style is crisp and moder, all mixed and eclectic or the new traditional, any of the images especially when oversized can add new strength & beauty to your interior. And the images don't necessarily have to be of an entire horse, it can be just of a detail, like the eyes or hair.

Now I know we all can't just go whip out the credit card and go to our local gallery to purchase these images - but what we can do is take some photos of our own. A friend of mine from high school, Adrianna, has a pony named Bruno and she shot this wonderful photo of. I really liked it - so she sent me a copy to play with. I edited it in B&W and did a burn to the edges. It's now ready to be enlarged, printed as a grid (more on that in another post) or transferred to canvas.

Other ways to trot some of this horse trend into your home is by adding some sculptural details to your space. These above were found at Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Z Gallerie. And how could we leave this horse trend without mentioning the icon of equestrian styling from Ralph Lauren...

Although these aren't of horses literally, they still add equestrian style & allure... plus it brings on a fresh perspective on such a traditional style with a great pop of color. To add a fresh modern take on this horse trend and keep it within a budget, keep your eyes open at your local thrift shop. Even if you stumble upon a red-wood carved Ming styled horse - make it modern by painting it white...

Horse head featured in House and Home - July

This white gloss wall mounted horse head is from Z Gallerie - but beware of an impostor! The Z Gallerie version sells for $129, but I found a seller on ebay (from Orlando Florida) selling what appears to be THE SAME item - for $199!! (That's bananas!!)

So how will you be adding a touch of horses to your home?
Through a pillow? a photograph? a silhouette? a sculpture?

You can raw your own illustration, or paint it on canvas, or even paint an oversized silhouette on a wall - and overlay with words SIMILAR to a room
