FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING 2011

A new year means time to rethink new color combinations around the home. Although I see my own pattern of routinely leaning towards cool colors - greens and blues - I am actually toying with the idea of playing with pinks. When I told mom this, she nearly fell to the floor - she knows for many years how pink to me was the equivalent of nails running down a chalk board.  Now here I am talking about having some of it in our home.

Maybe it's a representation of my personal growth (in other words - age lol). Or maybe it's simply just the fact that I'm more aware of my femininity vs. wearing balls all the time. I'm even finding myself drawn to roses even more than ever before. But rather than run right out and buy a boat load of pink spray paint, or window treatments, I've been testing living with subtle pops of pink by using the pink roses. And since I had two Pier One gift certificates, I used them to pick up two velvet & linen clearance pillows I had spotted on line. They pair well with the winter whites and greys I added after holiday.

Speaking of holiday, above pics are a look back at what I had done for New Year's Eve. This year, I had actually taken down the tree before NYE, and utilized that space to set our table for two. Although I did remove most Christmas decor to de-clutter before New Years Eve, I did use some of the more glam decorations (like more mercury and mirrors) paired with gold and added black for new years. I'll post more details about the New Years Eve tablescape during holiday 2011.

Can't share after pics until the space has been revealed to David.
He's been on the west coast at various guest appearances, doing interviews and now is headed to the frigid cold up north for some upcoming specials.

As for now, along with still getting adjusted to the new schedule, trying to maintain blog posts, a studio makeover last week and sourcing details for David's designs, I'm also looking around for some new inspiration to try new looks around here. Many of the fabrics I've been spotting have been a great source of inspiration - more so than stores (and even some magazines). Stores haven't yet received all their "pink" goods, and those that have, like Homegoods, I've already seen sold out. Below are some shots I've captured while out sourcing... and have become my inspirations for this year...

2011 PALETTE INSPIRATIONS:

IKAT PRINTS
especially in greens or pinks

GREEN
and natural elements
(always my fave!)

GRAPHIC PRINTS
like trellis, fret, and chevron patterns

STUDDED DETAILS
which I'd like to attempt to do to my white sofa.

How has your year been going so far? Any new adventures or projects?
What is inspiring you?

Stay tuned for the studio makeover reveal, upcoming spring table styling, new projects to tackle, new thrifted finds and more home makeovers...

BOOKSTYLING: MINI MAKEOVER FOR MONDAY

Not all makeovers need to be as in depth as refinishing furniture, painting a room, or moving furniture around. A simple switch of accessories and books can instantly transform a focal point in a space. I did just that while dusting  and cleaning the house on Saturday. As an effort to try an control clutter around the house, I had originally pulled all books and magazines together in our home office. Lately, I've been using some more as stacks around the house...

Dining room buffet

Side tables in the living space.

Ottoman / coffee table in living space
with two of three fave Kelly Hoppen books.

Books stacked with textured wooden box (hiding Sephora's toys)
on $30 thrift store buffet in living space (at salon styled wall).

So over the weekend I pulled the stacks together, along with keeping on display some of our sea-inspired trinkets from our travels and some photos (After-all - it is still 100 degrees and summertime in Florida!). To lighten up some of the mix and add texture, I added in some wooden trays and bamboo chargers (leaning within the bottom shelf) as well as added two extra shelves back into the unit...

Books of importance on display and tell a story...
Design, architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright, Italy,
and "never letting anything steal my JOY" - books from Joel Osteen.

Shells we gathered in Marco and Sanibel Island.
Trays worked well to help contain magazines.

Coral from key largo, bamboo charger from Ikea.
The books with a binding not matching decor
(like in red or yellow) I flipped the jackets to have
them covered in white, and still work with the composition.

Key West conch, thrift store cylinder, Habitat for Humanity frames -
which are neutral enough to transition into fall.
I have some photos of us up in DC during autumn that should work...
Glass container fillers can easily be switched out
for stones, black sand, and acorns.

Magazines in trays fit well on added shelf and are
easily accessible while sipping wine on a rainy afternoon
or sharing TV time with the hubs...

Wicker chair adds to the texture in the space.

The way the unit was set up before was coming across as merchandised to some, but it was also a nod to the style of one of my favorite interior designers - Kelly Hoppen. Her style, although it can be eclectic, is very clean and modern. Her signature is repeating items and pulling together objects in multiples. My husband and I are happy with this simple update. Jeff LOVES his flat screen, and I LOVE books - together on our Ikea TV unit, they make a good marriage (kinda like us!).

More personalized book styling and shelf displays.

Unit last fall 2009. White vases are now able to get used upstairs
in the office, and refresh those shelves as well (upcoming post).

I did pack-up the blue & white and started to neutralize the space for Fall. No pumpkins out yet - that will be in September. Still feels too early to go fall in August (although retailers already have Halloween & Thanksgiving set).

I can already sense the days daylight getting shorter... so fall is just around the corner! Now is a good time to stock-up on black candles and harvest scents for the home before they are sold out and replaced with Christmas!

 Thanks for stopping by...
