ASA Decorators Showhouse Spotlight: The Master Terrace

Besides magazines, searching the Internet or touring stores & showrooms, another option to source for interior design inspiration is to visit Designer Showhouses - especially in the Spring.  Most designer showhouses are non-profit fund raising events held in historical dwellings across the country. Some of them include Kips Bay Showhouse in New York City, Hamptons Showhouse, and San Fransisco Decorators Showhouse. I even learned from my Godmother when we spoke on Mother's Day, she volunteered at the Mansion in May Designer Showhouse in her hometown of Spring Lake New Jersey. And this week, if you're in the Atlanta area, you can tour the 44th Annual Atlanta Symphony Decorators Showhouse. I learned of the ASA Decorators Showhouse from fellow blogger Sherry Hart of Design Indulgence who had attended when the showhouse opened in late April, and ends on May 18. Of the many beautifully designed spaces in the Atlanta showhouse, one really caught my attention: The Master Terrace, designed by Lance Jackson and David Ecton, the Co-Founders of Parker Kennedy Living . While you can visit Sherry's blog to see the two-part tour of the showhouse (links listed at end of post), I found a few "behind the scenes" photos Lance had shared to see how this magical outdoor living space came to be. The incredible transformation can also become inspiration for your own backyard retreat...

This is TRULY a spectacular 'outdoor living space' - once really gets the sense of this being an entire room added onto the exterior of a house - and it basically was, thanks to Lance's vision. It's the perfect space for relaxing with coffee and a book on Sunday morning or gather with friends & cocktails on a Saturday evening. From the ground up, here's a look at how the space came to be...

BEFORE

Just love the use of lattice panels and the construction of the hip roof, they later cover along with including a square scalloped edge valance...

AFTER

Besides the crispness of the color scheme, strong sense of balance and harmony this space has, I LOVE the repeating elements such as the brass mirror and how their shape relates to the brass inset on the coffee table - Brilliant!

If you're as inspired as I am to re-create this look for your outdoor living space, some of the items are actually available at Parker Kennedy Living, Charish, Home Depot and even Target - pulled together in a "get the look" statement at Kelly Market...

I must admit: I have a HUGE crush on the Vintage Ficks Reed & Co Rattan Love-seat from Parker Kennedy, and it's actually been reduced on Charish!

As I mentioned in my post last week about the Inside-Out Design Challenge on Olioboard, I created and enter a design board inspired by this outdoor living space - By no means is it meant to be a copy - but just shows how you can see something, from fashion to decor, be inspired, put your spin own it and make it your own. And although the designers have some restrictions to consider when creating their spaces at these design showhouses, their design style still shines through.

The Italian style home, called the Palazzo Rosa, was designed by architects Neel Reid, Hal Hentz, and Philip Schutze in the 1920's. It has been called the "Pink Palace" because of the previous stucco color and classic pink dogwoods lining its driveway. This year the historic Palazzo Rosa with its 5 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms in a 16,000 sq ft space was chosen to showcase 30 of the Southeast's Top Designers. If you're not able to attend, be sure to visit bloggers who have:

Outdoor Living Design Challenge Sponsored by Hayneedle & Design Camp at Olioboard!

There is a fun & new Design Challenge happening at Olioboard! The challenge is sponsored by Hayneedle + Lori Dennis, Inc. for Interior Design Camp. All you have to do to enter is create your own outdoor living design board, utilizing five pieces from the Hayneedle Outdoor Living set, (set selections picked by Olioboard's CEO, Sheilah MacSporran) and add your board entry to the challenge. Enter the contest or vote for your favorite design boards - Once Daily - Now thru May 23. After the votes are tallied, and the Top 50 Boards meeting the rule qualifications for the Inside-Out Contest on Olioboard will become eligible for the first place prize: a $1000 shopping spree from Hayneedle PLUS (and this is the big win!!) receive a ticket to attend this summer's Interior Design Camp with Lori Dennis & Kelli Ellis!

I haven't been on Olioboard since holiday time, and this contest was exciting to learn about. Although I've entered but not won a chance to attend other design camps, I'd especially like to go to this camp because it's being held at Las Vegas World Market during Market Week (a design event on this side of the country! yay!!). I had attended LVMKT Winter Market - and loved it(see my recap video too!) But now that winter is FAR behind us, it's time to get outside and enjoy outdoor living. Here are some of my Outdoor Living boards I entered in the contest - taking on the perspective of a homeowner or a consumer creating a 3D board, plus a merchandising board to shop the look featuring the 5 key elements & pieces from Hayneedle I included in by board designs...

OUTDOOR LIVING - SMALL SPACE 5
From park inspiration, include these 5 key pieces into outdoor living space - even if it's a small space:
1. A comfortable outdoor ottoman to kick your feet up onto.
2. Bold stripes
3. Fun patterns to mix.
4. Comfortable conversation area.
5. Extra seating, or even a bistro for sipping morning coffee at.

OUTDOOR LIVING - ENTERTAINING 5
Include these 5 key elements into outdoor living space - great for entertaining:
1.Garden stools can add pattern & texture + become extra seating in a pinch.
2. An outdoor dining table - Rounds are great for small square spaces.
3. Bring pattern outside with outdoor textiles such as pillows.
4. Just like you do inside, mix wicker finishes - seats vs tables - to break up a "matched set" look.
5. Soften hard edges of pergolas with outdoor curtain panels. Here, I chose white to pop among the greens and wood.

Finish off the area with interesting containers for plants (bringing the garden to your deck or patio) - not to mention: be sure to include a great grill for all those delicious summer recipes you've been pinning all winter!

To View & Vote - Click here: ZIGZAG GAZEBO

My board is not a copy by any means, especially when trying to use more specific items featured in the Hayneedle Outdoor Living set on Olioboard. The TRUE inspiration for my "ZigZag Gazebo" actually came from a design showhouse in Atlanta I saw featured in my stream on Facebook.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE this outdoor space! The Ultimate Cabana, designed by Lance Jackson & Parker Kennedy for the Atlanta Symphony Showhouse (more about the showhouse and this space in an upcoming post!)

Even if the lattice look isn't for you, substitute for a gazebo tent - Customize your canopy top with a scallop edge valance.

Gazebo available at Hayneedle - or locally at Home Depot, Lowes, or Target.
While at Hayneedle, also be sure to enter their Great Outdoor Giveaway!

 LOVE this square scallop valance!

Not a board I entered - I just created for fun, but great to show the merging of fashion & decor!

OUTDOOR LIVING - POOLSIDE 5
Include these 5 key elements into outdoor living space - perfect poolside:
1. Add mirrors outside to help create depth & luxury (especially when framed in gold!).
2. If you love a pattern inside, you'll also love it outside and create a natural flow from the inside-out.
3. Don't fear whites outdoors: they only get naturally brighter from the sun.
4. Break up B&W patterns with a crisp color splash of green.
5. Create privacy, shade, and drama outdoors with outdoor curtains, which when done in multiples can create a soft curtain wall, even behind lattice work.

The contest prize at Olioboard for Inside-Out get even better since the summer design camp will be held at Las Vegas World Market, during Summer Market Week plus one of the guest speakers on Day 1 will be Sheilah from Olioboard!

Outdoor Living Space Designs

Olioboard recently teamed up with Wayfair, a terrific home furnishings source for your online shopping experience (they are LOADED with a diverse assortment of goods!! A Zillion to be exact!). To launch their new partnership with Olioboard, Wayfair will be having 3 weeks of design challenges. This week is The Ultimate Patio Design Challenge. Patios come in all shapes, sizes, climates and locations. Here are a few I put together this week from an urban city patio, to a desert living patio to even poolside or along the beach. You can click any link (links are title + bold) to see details on the board - plus vote for your favorites!

Inspired by the thought of a South Beach Hotel on Ocean Drive - or a patio for a home off Alton Road, Miami Beach.

A more modern loungey feel is what you see in South Beach hotels, Utilizing benches behind the sofa worked great for extra seating or even to hold lamps (various lighting used at night near water adds sexy ambiance). Lanterns tucked in the umbrellas also add to the ambiance at night (it's important to envision a space both day & night) Well manicured topiaries add organic style & structure to the strong architectural lines.

Inspired by the 80's Miami slogan: MIAMI - SEE IT LIKE A NATIVE.

Remembering much of the clean line architecture of Miami, much of it built in the 60's and 70's, they also used a lot of stone mixed with wood. Many of the exteriors of the modern wave of 80's & 90's architecture is white. The board was conceptualized by combining this memory, along with an old ad slogan from the 80's, "Miami - See it like a native" plus the graphic punch of both bold & zebra stripes to highlight the Wayfair merchandise. I may have been born in New Jersey, and lived there for 10 years, but I did live in Miami for most of my life (33 yrs) so I am kind of native :)

Lux Beach Outdoor Living Area - Miami Beach Lifestyle board.

Note: This board I created my making a duplicate of an earlier board (Seaside Chic). The "room" was made from photo images - flipped & cropped. After duplicating the initial board, I removed all the furnishings to clear out the space and use Wayfair merchandise for the challenge. The ceiling fan wasn't n the set to choose from. I found the outdoor fan on Wayfair's site to upload to me library.

Lux Beach Outdoor Living Area - Miami Beach - Lifestyle & Product board.

Note: After saving my initial 3D board, I reloaded it to create a new board - and used a linen background, part of the new backgrounds available in Olioboards Pro Tools.  Since the challenge called for at least 5 Wayfair products to be used on the boards, I called them out below. I only wish the test tool enabled a means of also creating a background, to better see the text. I might need to go back and crop my own white boxes to make it easier to read.

Living in the city can mean tight quarters when it comes to an outdoor living space - But these guys have the essentials: A grill, table & chairs, a sofa, TV's and beer + a canvas artwork creates the focal point.  (Think outdoor modern mancave)

Note: The greenery walls were inspire from a photo of the West Elm store in Seattle, where recently the CEO of Olioboard, Sheilah Macsporn, gave a presentation about the site. After I did some cropping and editing to the picture, I was able to start to layer and build the space for Guys Urban Patio (think Brooklyn, between buildings)

Living in the desert can be pretty brutal on an outdoor space - But come late September, when the evenings cool down - THIS IS the place to be.
Note: I created this space from cropping and layering a pergola I spotted on Olioboard, but flipped it to work with the cacti image (I found online earlier this year). The layer behind the image is one of the new "Backgrounds" Olioboard added to their Pro Plan Tools. Since we do not have as many shady trees here in AZ, I have seen many of the pergolas used to help defuse the suns light. A pergola gives a great place to hang outdoor lighting or lanterns.

Don't forget to stop by Olioboard and vote for your favorite boards or create one of your own. Voting for The Ultimate Patio Design challenge ends Monday, June 18. Afterwards, a new challenge will be launched! I wonder what type of space it will be? Stay tuned to find out! If you'd like to inquire about me creating a board for you, contact me at nyclqd@yahoo.com.
