A DIY & SNEAK PEEK AT SHERBERT NOSEGAYS

Whether you pronounce it "Sherbert" or "Sherbet", these roses were a refreshing splash of color added to one of the most recent ColorSplash Miami makeovers. Although I can't show you the entire space (you'll have to wait until the show air's sometime in June!!) I will share with you the simple nosegay arrangements I was delighted to make for the space.

Patricia and Gina once again made excellent selections in accessories and David created another fabulous painting to tie together the colors & mood of the space.

My traveling scissors ;-)

Nosegay arrangements are a simple, modern and clean look for flower arrangements. To make some yourself, you can use roses or carnations can work too. Simply remove all the leafy greens from your flowers, for roses - also remove one or two guard petals. Afterwards start to place the stems in your hand - creating a solid ball of color with the flowers. Looking down onto your arrangement, you can adjust the shape by carefully pulling out center flowers to create a little height and taper down to create the 'ball' - but still keep your blooms tightly together. Cut off the excess length of the stems, to make it easier to loop a small clear hair-tie (or reuse the rubber band from the flowers).  Pull the band up close to the blooms to keep your ball of color tight and strong.

Holding your arrangement at the edge of the counter along with your vessel, you'll be able to judge how much more stem needs to be cut. Cut stems at a 45 degree angle, place in your container of choice, add to your end table or vignette and enJOY!

Thanks for stopping by!

THE STUDIO MAKEOVER

Hi all!! Can you believe not only is the weekend here, but we're into the second month of a new year?? I know I've been so consumed with sourcing shops for the Color Splash team and helping out with makeovers while maintaining our home front, and it really just feels like this past month just flew by! I know most of you are buried in snow, but down here in Florida, we're already starting to feel the effects of longer days (YAY! More sunlight!)

All photos captured by Lynda Quintero-Davids.

As promised, here's some before and after shots of the studio makeover, accomplished by just five of us gals (Patricia, Gina, Laura, Kathy and myself), in basically two days, with minimal money spent. Basically the only money spent was on purchasing more clear totes for snacks and food in the kitchen area, storage boxes to conceal some of the samples collected over time, mobile office supply containers and hired two guys to paint a few walls one afternoon (grey and blue).

Two days before the move, Kathy and Gina had measured most of the studio, so that Gina could input the info to come up with a CAD drawing. The Associate Producer, Lauren, also asked me what I thought of the current layout and if I could come up with an option for Julie and the crew to choose from - so I did what I usually do - I came up with Option A, B, and C. We had a meeting the following day, and we all agreed it would be between option C and Gina's plan, so both plans were faxed to Julie. And even though Option C was chosen, we tweaked it along the way. And the camera crew also has done some tweaking for depth in their shots...

Yes - Laugh. I don't know CAD - but I can
sketch, cut & paste the hell out of any space plan and
help move it to make it happen! =)

The A, B & G plans were rather safe - lining things up to the wall and boxing off areas, but for option C I had utilized what I remember a teacher telling me - "Don't always play it safe" and "Whenever you're given something, go with it don't fight it." Keeping that in mind, considering the open loft space and taking a cue from the current layout, Option C incorporated "floating" spaces by using 45 degree angles. I use to do it in the store as well, and for some reason, angles get met with resistance. However that may be, the space still turned out amazing after we were done moving it around, cleared the clutter, and created a few vignettes...

Although I did try the angled seating area and adjacent office table, I was was out-voted (and I'm the newbie so I didn't argue). I moved forward to work on the two wall units, unloaded the two carts of stuff we had emptied off them to move them, and styled the shelves to reflect the creativity in the space. To help empty out the office (to be revealed later) I was going to utilize some of the accessories paired with all the sample books. Patricia got a jump start on that by bringing over all the extra pillows out of the office storage. I brought over some of the unlabeled paint cans - in black to help ground all the color and give weight along the bottom on the unit. Bringing over the two orange Bobby Berk chairs helped create a possible new area to film "Options" in (which they did and I got to see in action yesterday!! VERY cool!)

Patricia had the brilliant idea of grouping the rest of the paint cans by color blocks, and labeled all of them with simple grey duck tape and a black marker (I love when things are organized!! And this now is!!). The silver and black cans give an industrial look to David's new painting area, and also framed the window by using them on either side. It also created a great little nook to stack all of Davids canvases - which were removed from all their shopping boxes. The added bonus: both paint can fixtures are on wheels so it makes it easier for the camera crew to move around for a shot if needed.

Speaking of organized... here's some more details of the studio makeover...

Mobile office supplies:
I picked up this glass tray at Ikea for 9.99
along with some glass vases to hold pencils from HomeGoods.

One of two studio work tables

Utilized 3M Command Hooks to hang 3M headsets off column.

It's been a VERY cool experience to see behind the scenes of how a show is produced, all it takes to "get the shot", moving the studio around to create depth in the shots, and the importance of lighting....

Sofa angled to create depth.

Babushkas moved to float and add color.

Multiple lighting sources.

Hope you enjoyed the Color Splash Studio tour. As with any makeover for anyone, who it was for is HAPPY and that's what matters most. Yesterday, while I was helping clean-up over at the makeover house, David paid me a tremendous compliment that made me VERY happy. He said, "You're so neat and organized - I love it!"

Studio Office - Before

The office got a little tweaking too... I'll show that next week.
Today I'm off to thrift because Faith Farm is having a SALE!

Have a wonderful weekend!

PROJECTS TO DO

How has your year been going for you so far? Are you snowed in wherever you are? Have you made a list of projects you'd like to tackle? Anyone doing any major renovations? Painting projects? Is anyone moving to a new place and excited about starting the year with a clean slate? I'd love to hear about it! Email me and send me pics of your DIY's, mini or massive makeovers. Similar to last March where I had March Modern Madness month, I'd like to try to put together a March Makeovers Month. In the meantime, these are some personal projects I'd like to accomplish the first half of this year:

Color Inspiration

New color combos: Pop in Pairs:
Something different I'd like to try is to pop a pair of colors - not just one - with my existing neutrals. Fortunately, I already have soft grey walls throughout our home, so the new neutral is already here. By incorporating some pops of pink and living with it, it has become an inspiration on its own and it's grown on me. Some pairings I'd like try are rose & grassy green for Spring, grassy green and gold with grey, and fuchsia with orange for summer. I'm also going to try to use less black - even though I wear it everyday =)

DIY Project to tackle this year: Sewing:
I'd like to utilize the fabric sources I'm learning about to apply them to make pillows on my own as well as window panels, and slipcovers for the two white ottomans (Sephora had turned into a scratching post - ggrrrrr) and also try to slipcover our bed (with help from my friend Jose!)

Painting projects I'd like to try: Distressing pieces:
I'd like to age an accent wall or room (bedroom or a bathroom maybe), by blending and mixing all the cream, grey, brown and black I already own... I'd also like to lighten & brighten a few accessories (ie repaint!) as well as also try stenciling a pattern in the half-bath (and maybe one other wall around here, or at my moms.)

I few other projects I'd like to work on this year is to better organize & consolidate all our keepsakes, create an inspiration board for the home office - and not a project but a plan - be in New York City for the Ten Year 911Memorial & Anniversary. Even if our budget only allows for one trip this year, THAT is where I want to be in September. I was there for the one year, and I told myself I'd come back for the ten year.

After the Color Splash "gig" ends (around March) I'll be refocusing my attention back on building my blog, brand, business and client projects to makeover. I had thought I'd be able to do both, but it won't be fair to either one, so I've been focused on learning all I can (as well as sharing and networking) for as long as I'm there.

STUDIO BEFORE

STUDIO AFTER

David came back to the studio and loved it! he commented that "it 'feels' like home." A few others have commented the same, and the girl I've been working with (Kathy) said she "feels more productive now that everything is organized". That makes me happy.

More pics to post of the reveal this week.. Stay tuned...

NEW YEAR NEWNESS

New tasks. New schedules. New gigs. So far this past first week of the new year has brought all of the above.  To bring you into the present, I've got to take you back to this past summer. Back in June, I had blogged about the premiere episode of the new Color Splash season and location ... Color Makes A Splash In Miami and More Color Splash Over Miami

ColorSplash

Soon after creating the posts, I had looked up the production company, along with names of people related to the Color Splash program. Since I was very focused last year on breaking free of my "shop girl" past, as well as learn & connect to more people in the design industry, I added those names I found to my connections on LinkedIn. I also searched their names on Facebook, and sent a friend request - which thankfully was accepted.
This past December, making those connections paid off in a wonderful way: I had received an email (from the shows Executive in Charge of Production) to come interview with the crew and staff of Color Splash Miami - as an additional Design Assistant for the show.  So yes (SMH) - I got to meet Designer David Bromstad, Patricia Rothman (David's Design Coordinator), Gina (David's Trainee), Stuart (David's Carpenter), the show's producer Julie, along with all the other team members (assistant producer, production assistants, and camera crew) who together create Color Splash.

After interviewing with them, I awaited a call from the shows Executive in Charge of Production - Michelle (my original connection on LinkedIn and Facebook), who called two days after the interview to ask if I'd like to start January 3... And so I did =)

David B. and me the day of the reveal.

This past week I started the gig I had interviewed for back in December. Ironically, the studio is located near the Design District (which I had temporarily worked at back in September), so I was already familiar with the drive, neighborhood, and traffic patterns. I've learned a lot of new names and terms, but I've also been able to apply some of my past experiences to help with some of the organization of the makeovers scheduled, as well as product display for a shoot. Understandably however, I cannot show you any the makeovers... You'll have to wait until they air, which should be in/around April or May. As it does get closer, I'll give ya the heads up!
My apologies for not having been more consistent with posting this past week. Combining a work schedule and time to blog is new for me. I mostly enjoy writing the posts in the morning and afternoon - writing at night is different (and challenging). So what I'm trying to do is write the weeks post over the weekend, save them, and still post daily, which should work out.
I also have two more client projects coming up, a contribution request (for centerpiece ideas) from HGTV.com, along with a makeover for my mom. I'm going to be teaming up with an old friend (Jose) who started up his own company. He has an online site called KoutureComfortInc featuring custom pillows, window panels, throws, home fragrances with candles and room sprays, and a skin care line he just set in a shop on Lincoln Road. I'll be blogging about the launch party from the shop during the second week in February. Jose's even pushing for me to write a book... so we'll see what else the new year will bring...

Jose snapped this shot just after I had interviewed with ColorSplash.

In the meantime, I'm so excited to be learning about production and be a part of a dynamic team who together produce a fine show! And hey - Hello! David Bromstad!!! In my honest opinion - he is "THEE" Design Star. He was not only the first, but set the bar and standard for others to reach to - which sorry but - I don't think anyone else after him has been as successful as he has been!!

New year... New gigs... and New Adventures!
